Brisbane Institute of Strengths Based Practice

Who We Are

Our History

The Brisbane Institute of Strengths Based Practice (Inc) was founded in 2006 to support approaches that promote resilience as opposed to dealing with deficits.

We are a group of people from a range of professional backgrounds such as social work, psychology, education and management that believe, work with and advocate strengths based practices.

We recognise that the strength based movement is gaining impetus globally, with people from diverse backgrounds attracted to this inward looking practice, whether it be teachers utilising such strategies with their students, helping professionals engaging with clients to fulfil their potential, or employers and HRD Managers utilising strength based performance appraisals with their employers.

 What are SBPs?

Strengths-based practice is an approach that focuses on identifying and leveraging the strengths, assets, and resources of individuals, families, communities, and organizations. It is a philosophy and way of working that emphasizes the positive aspects of individuals and their environments, rather than solely focusing on their deficits, weaknesses, or problems. The strengths-based approach recognizes that everyone possesses unique strengths, talents, abilities, and resources that can be harnessed to promote growth, resilience, and positive change.

The key principles of strengths-based practice include:

Strengths Identification: The approach involves actively identifying and acknowledging the strengths and capabilities of individuals or systems. This can include their skills, talents, knowledge, values, relationships, and support networks.

Empowerment and Collaboration: Strengths-based practice seeks to empower individuals by involving them in the decision-making process and encouraging active participation in their own development. Practitioners collaborate with individuals, families, or communities as equal partners, respecting their expertise and perspectives.

Solution-Oriented: Instead of focusing solely on problems or deficits, strengths-based practice looks for solutions and possibilities. It seeks to identify what is working well and build upon existing strengths to achieve positive outcomes.

Contextual Understanding: The approach recognizes that individuals exist within complex systems and social contexts. It takes into account the environmental, cultural, and social factors that influence an individual’s strengths and challenges, considering the broader context in which they operate.

Cultivating Hope and Resilience: Strengths-based practice emphasizes the promotion of hope, optimism, and resilience. It helps individuals and systems recognize their potential for growth and change, fostering a sense of confidence and belief in their ability to overcome challenges.

Holistic and Individualized Approach: Strengths-based practice recognizes the uniqueness of each individual and their specific circumstances. It takes into account the whole person, considering their physical, emotional, social, and cultural dimensions. The approach tailors interventions and support based on individual strengths and needs.

Appreciative Inquiry: This technique involves actively seeking out and amplifying positive experiences, successes, and achievements. It encourages individuals to reflect on their past successes and explore how these can be replicated or built upon in the present and future.

Strengths-based practice finds application in various fields such as social work, counseling, education, community development, healthcare, and organizational management. It is utilized in diverse settings, including schools, hospitals, community centers, workplaces, and therapeutic interventions, to enhance well-being, empowerment, and positive change.
